The aim of this paper is to discuss the notion of trauma and dissociation. Current difficulties with recognizing and diagnosing dissociative disorders result from the complexity of theories about dissociation. We elaborate on the problem of post traumatic conditions in relation to the concept of trauma-related disorders spectrum and outline the fundamental principles of the structural dissociation of the personality theory. This theory provides a useful framework to understand the psychodynamic characteristic of trauma survivors. It is also useful in the diagnostic process and treatment of dissociative patients.
