The goal of the paper is to clarify the key concepts of psycholinguistics – speech, language, speaking, and communication – by describing their nature and mutual relations. Speech, following de Saussure, is understood as a multidimensional phenomenon, including language system and its realization – speaking. The process of speaking, which decodes the language structure, is determined by the demands of effective communication: the ability to communicate with other people.
