The basis of the athlete’s psychological preparation is the optimal use of his psychological and physical potential, which consists of individual characteristics of his personality, environmental factors and the influence of people cooperating with the player. Knowledge about the temperamental traits and emotional intelligence of athletes is cognitively useful in providing athletes with the proper course of the training process and effective determination of the players’ capabilities in terms of achieving high sports results. The basic goal of the conducted research was to characterize athletes of individual and team disciplines in the scope of intensification of temperament traits and to determine the level of emotional intelligence of the tested competitors. The following tools were used: Formal Characteristics of Behavior – Temperament Questionnaire and Two-dimensional Emotional Intelligence Inventory DINEMO. Statistically significant difference between athletes of individual and team disciplines was revealed in the level of their activity. The surveyed athletes of team disciplines received a high score in the general emotional intelligence, while individual discipline players received an average score on the overall level of their emotional intelligence. In terms of the emotionality of other people, athletes practicing team sport disciplines obtained the average score, and individual discipline athletes obtained a low score. The conducted research allows to verify the current knowledge of the functioning of people professionally practicing sport and indicate further possible directions of research.
