The article deals with the problem of definition of selflessness in the social science. The number of approaches is discussed. It can be taken as a moral value or as a principle regulating socio-economic relations. It can be approached as a factor forming a person “from within” or a motivator of human actions. Depending on the consider context, the basic functions of selflessness in the human being as a subject, or to its manifold shades throughout the subject can affect the environment, are revealed. The concept of selflessness is discussed within diversity of anthropological contexts, in which some (individualistic ones) believe selflessness to be rooted in the sphere of man’s projections and in his basically egoistic nature, while others view it in a communal perspective as a gift of Self fostering human relations. It seems that an effort to understand the role of selflessness in psychological structure of human being can successfully defend its integral function in enhancing moral qualifications.
